ʚɞ The custom of Mărțișor, an ancestral symbol of an ancient scenario of time renewal at the threshold of spring, is traditionally linked to the moment of the symbolic death and birth of a local female deity - Baba Dochia. Mărțișor is also the popular name for the month of March, the month marking the beginning of the agrarian year.
ʚɞ In popular belief, the Mărțișor symbolises the rope of the year, which, through the intertwining of the two threads, gathers the 365 calendar days. The colours white and red represent the two opposing seasons, winter and summer. In old traditional societies, only these two main seasons were recognised, with spring and autumn being considered transitional seasons. According to Bukovina beliefs, the Mărțișor is the thread of the days of the year, spun by Baba Dochia as she climbed the mountain with her sheep, similar to the thread of human life spun at birth by the fates. The white colour represents the cold of the winter that was ending, while the red symbolises the warmth of the summer that was naturally to follow in the calendar.
ʚɞ The Mărțișor was a symbol worn with much dignity and solemnity by members of traditional society, who avoided any uncivilised behaviour during the period when the Mărțișor adorned their clothing.
